Adolescence Analysis| Adolescence Is The Best, Most Powerful Series I’ve Watch In A Long Time

I’m intimidated to begin this review because truthfully, I don’t know where to start with the masterpiece that is Adolescence.

There is so much to dissect, so many possible avenues to traverse. Nevertheless, I’ll attempt to give this series the clarity and reflection that it deserves, even if it’s just my stunned awe.

Netflix Series Adolescence Analysis

adolescence analysis

Here we go: In one word, Adolescence is riveting.

Adolescence Shot in One Take

I’ve never been so impatient when having to pause a show mid-watch because every moment is an important detail of action.

The clever artistic choice of producing each episode of the series all in one-shot was absolutely genius.

This allowed us as an audience to float through the series like a nosy ghost, getting all the juicy details of a case that we would otherwise only experience behind yellow Caution tape.

We stepped over the tape and got right into those secret rooms.

We were let into the interrogation rooms, the intense psych evaluations, and the terse home of the child on trial.

We were let into a world often out of our reach. A world we hope to never have to explore as a reality of our own.

Every emotion was so viscerally felt as we stepped into the series as an invisible extra, following the action with our camera lens eyes, floating above the scene with our aerial perspective.

Every pause – whether a food break, bathroom break, or prolonged comment – filled me with impatience as I was yanked out of a world that I was unready to leave.

I need to know what happens next with Jamie, his father, the investigators, the therapist…

Adolescence Cast & Characters

All around, every member of this cast successfully portrayed characters that felt so real and 3-dimensional. I was intrigued to continue to follow each one’s lives individually.

The immaculate script helped to create the most seamless scenes, enhanced by the lack of cuts. This pulled us into real time with the characters – 5 minutes for us as viewers was also 5 minutes for the characters.

How immersive!

It really felt like a mental, emotional, roller coaster ride that you just didn’t want to come off of.

Adolescence & Modern Masculinity

The themes in the Adolescence tv series are timely and important.

A prevalent theme is the harmful nature of the manosphere and the red pill mentality that plagued YouTube for some time. This mentality focuses on emphasizing shallow masculinity and opposing feminism.

Women are seen as sexual conquest, gold badges on their armor of manhood, and any threats to their manhood are met with rage and a need to dominate.

These harmful themes are the catalyst for the terrible crime that takes place in Adolescence.

Adolescence, Did He Do It?

In the first episode, we see this young, precious boy soil himself when the cops bust down his door and arrest him.

It has you thinking, did this little boy do it? Did he kill his classmate?

In the most seamless way, the story unravels deliberately, detail by detail, all of the juicy insight that we need to answer this question.

We learn of the school’s toxic environment, the secret language of these adolescents and the way that they’re feeding this desire to be liked and popular with toxic ideologies that cheapen the humanity of their peers in efforts to big up themselves.

Once we learn the truth of the murder, we then shift our focus to the why?

Adolescence, What’s the Motive?

Why would one student kill the other?

We look to find reason and place blame.

There must be something or someone in this child’s life that has caused them to become this kind of monster.

If we don’t discover this, then how can we ever hope to prevent it from happening again?

There are crumbs of curiosity throughout the series that there must be some genetic or situational error in the family.

Perhaps the child has been abused by the father.

Perhaps the father abuses substances.

Perhaps, the father.

Adolescence, The Family Impact

We, as nosy little ghosts in the series, take a peek into the murderer’s family life.

We see two loving parents, a sensible teenage daughter and yes, a father who has a bit of a temper but is not impulsive enough to take someone’s life because of it.

We see the parents look at each other, trying to see where they went wrong.

Taking accountability for whatever part they played or failed to play in their child’s life.

We see the parents mourn the loss of the child they thought they knew.

We see the parents carry the guilt and blood of the innocent on their own heads.

We see the crushing pain course through the father in a harrowing final scene.

“Sorry son, I should’ve done better.”

We see confusion as the parents see their beautiful daughter and wonder, how could we have raised both an angel and a demon?

Like Cain and Abel, how can evil and good emerge from the same roof?

Adolescence’s Vast World

Adolescence will leave you in awe and wonder.

I still wonder about the life of the investigator and his son.

I wonder about the accomplices in the murder.

I wonder about the victim’s best friend and how she’s coped with the loss.

This curiosity could warrant the lack of closure from loose ends but rather it speaks to the depth and breath of the world that this series was able to create in just 4 swift episodes.

The wonder I feel speaks to the film’s impeccable structure and its ability to portray human souls with such an expert level of authenticity.

It places viewers in the heart of the emotion, feeling the guilt, the fear, the disbelief, everything with the characters themselves.

Even moments of levity are wrought with the weight of anxiety. What’s going to go wrong now?

What new piece of the dreary puzzle will we find this time around?

In Conclusion…

Adolescence is the kind of creative, captivating, harrowing masterpiece that gives me inspiration to write reviews.

This show makes me grateful for all of the other subpar shows and movies that I’ve seen because it exemplifies the definition and standards of the word “excellence”.

It reminds me that I do not rate artwork arbitrarily or for the sake of tearing people’s efforts apart but rather for the pursuit and desire for what Adolescent so beautifully achieves. There is an achievable standard of excellent film and media – Adolescence is that bar.

Rating: 10/10
