Hog Heaven: The Pigz Brotherz Story | Touching Short on the Raleigh Music Scene
Meet Danny Squires, the main squeeze of the Pigz. We see vintage, VHS tape footage from the 1980s of a young man right before he goes on stage with his serendipitously formed band, The Pigz Brotherz.

Meet Raleigh, North Carolina. We see old news clips stating its massive projected growth within a short period of time. This “great migration” caused the demolition of humble buildings of the past, most notably, The Berkeley Cafe’s first location, The Pigz Brotherz musical home.

One news clip notes, “Although this location [of the Berkeley Cafe] is closing, The Berk won’t be going anywhere. They’re moving to the former Fiction Kitchen on South Dawson Street.”

The Pigz Brotherz Masters Focus
Only 10 minutes long, this short documentary masters focus, illustrating the story with mainly two narrative voices, Danny 40 years after the creation of The Pigz, and clips from local Raleigh news broadcasts over the course of those 40 years.
We learn of the smooth rock band’s beginnings playing at the Berkeley Cafe’s Open Mic Nights (bringing together the three Pigz: Danny Squires, Sonny Sherrill, and Chip Davis), hear them play soulfully to a room of appreciative fans, touch on some struggles in the middle, and wrap it up with fond memories as the band revisits their glory days.

The Pigz Brotherz and Raleigh, NC
As someone who frequents Raleigh often, it was fascinating to learn more about the quickly emerging city. A city that, 5 years ago, was not even remotely on my radar.
To hear of its history, to see how it’s evolved culturally, and to know of some important landmarks, like the Berkeley Cafe, is genuinely intriguing. I feel like I’m walking away from this documentary more knowledgeable.
Piecing Together The Pigz Short
Director, producer, and cinematographer Scott Simerly Jr. gracefully pieces together a simple yet impactful picture of an era so silently profound.
He edits the film in a way that preserves the personality within the narrative voices and honors the lives of all those involved.
The Pigz Run-Time: A Pro and Con
The narrowed scope of the film made the 10-minute run-time feel comprehensive as is, but it also laid a solid foundation for even further exploration of the evolution of the music scene into present day Raleigh. That said, the film’s time crunch was both a strength and a limit. There was so much left unspoken.
From here, I’d love to explore other bands that were inspired by the Pigz Brotherz.
I’d also love to explore other venues that drive the Raleigh music scene.
And there’s room to get even more granular and investigate different perspectives of The Pigz Brotherz. Danny admits, “My wife would not like me telling you probably this, but I’m going to tell it to you anyway.”
Why?
How did the other members of the band view their experience?
What kept the three of them together for 39 years when many bands barely last seven?
How about loyal fans of the band? What kept them coming back?
This documentary could easily be a full 90-minute film, however, given how niche the topic is, 10 minutes is the perfect intro to get your feet wet for those of us hearing about this for the first time.
The Pigz Touching Message
Hog Heaven: The Pigz Brotherz Story manages to leave you with a touching nostalgia for the beautiful and mysterious journey of life.
It’s mentioned several times that the growing popularity of the band had not even been an intentional endeavor but was rather a falling domino string of luck.
As Danny puts it, “You know, 39 years was about 38 years and 11 months longer than I ever thought we’d play.”
It makes you wonder, what seemingly insignificant pastimes could spark your next adventure?
It creates this ease that life is working with you to make your story. Sometimes it’s not about an endless pursuit of glory but just being faithful and consistent with what you have presently can be the key to your next big break.
In Conclusion…
Overall, Hog Heaven: The Pigz Brotherz Story highlights what remains when the buildings come down. Although The Berkeley Cafe of the 80s doesn’t look much like it used to, the music, the memories, and the impact of those simple Open Mic nights may have been foundational to the growing Raleigh music scene.
The brief run time made it difficult to fully capture the band’s impact. Nonetheless, this film sparks curiosity, hope, and reflection on just how the dominoes in your life might fall in your favor.
