Sam Bahadur Hit or Flop?

Sam Bahadur, a biographical war-drama film based on the life of India’s first field marshal Sam Manekshaw, was released on the OTT platform on 26th January 2024. I must say, the release date (Republic Day) couldn’t have been more perfect.

If you’re wondering whether the film Sam Bahadur hit or flopped, its high audience ratings, culturally relevant timing, and authentic essence make it clear that this film is worth the watch.

Sam Bahadur Hit or Flop? Refuting the Critics

Some film critics might write about the film’s “lack of cohesion” and “inability to generate heightened tension and intrigue.” And perhaps Sam Bahadur’s box office collection might have also suffered due to the release of Animal on the same day!

But please note that movies are not always about putting the audience on the edge of their seats.

It is about the experience.

It is about learning about something that you don’t get to see in daily life or other films.

How many of us really think of soldiers and the hard work they put in to safeguard our nations?

At least, if someone has put an honest effort to introduce us to the life of our soldiers and tried their best to give us that cinematic experience, we should appreciate & support them, isn’t it?

I am very happy that the audience feels that way because the movie has received an 8.0 rating on IMDb based on 10,000+ votes.

Sam Bahadur tries to give a sneak peek into the life & personality of Sam Manekshaw, India’s first field marshal.

The movie covers the major incidents/challenges of Sam’s career spanning over 4 decades. It is a kind of documentary presented with cinematic richness.

The movie enables us to witness the incredible journey of Sam Manekshaw, who participated in 5 epic battles, successfully completed 4 decades in uniform, and was the first Indian Army officer to be promoted to the rank of Field Marshal.

Yes, I do agree with some critics that a smooth transition from one scene to another with suitable captions would have been helpful, but it is not very difficult to get the flow of the screenplay as well.

The real essence of the movie is the portrayal of Indian soldiers and the war scenes. The war scenes are depicted in a realistic manner, which adds to the movie’s authenticity.

It highlights the personality, courage, and valor of the soldiers and their contribution to India’s military history.

Sam Bahadur is a movie that boasts incredible performances and rich cinematography.

Sam Bahadur Vicky Kaushal

Sam Bahadur‘s Vicky Kaushal, who plays the titular role, carries the entire movie on his shoulders with his pitch-perfect portrayal of the Indian hero. Although the climax may not give you an adrenaline rush like other movies, you cannot get enough of Vicky’s acting.

He completely hooks you to the screen with his perfect look, body language, mannerisms, and dialogue delivery. He gets under the skin of the character and shows what the personality of India’s great soldier and leader looked like.

The spark in his eyes and the thunder in his voice are truly magical. Even after the movie ends, you’ll be left wanting more of Vicky Kaushal’s Sam Bahadur 🙂

Sam Bahadur‘s Director & Incredible Cast

Let’s not forget to acknowledge the director’s efforts.

Making biographical movies based on war/drama requires a lot of courage. It’s commendable that a woman directed over 100+ men to perform the war scenes, get a pitch-perfect portrayal of Sam from Vicky Kaushal, and authentically portray the life of soldiers.

This is what sets director Megha Gulzar apart from the rest.

Kudos to Sanya Malhotra and Fatima Sheik for their impressive portrayals of Silloo Manekshaw and Indira Gandhi, respectively. The entire cast has done a wonderful job.

The soulful composition, engaging background score, authentic costume & art design, and rich cinematography all contribute to the marvelous cinematic experience that Sam Bahadur provides for the audience.

In Conclusion…

On the whole, our observation of India’s 75th Republic Day has been very meaningful. It was informative and inspirational.

Taking my 4-year-old daughter to the flag hoisting ceremony, involving her in the soldier-related performance, watching Sam Bahadur together, and witnessing the first-ever all-women parade exchange salutations with President Droupadi Murmu has been a totally entertaining and empowering experience.

So without a doubt, Sam Bahadur was absolutely a hit for me.
