The Love Overboard Show Is Love Island On A Yatch (And I’m Obsessed)
The Love Overboard show brought all of the juicy drama, drama-inciting personalities, and backstabbing opportunities that make Love Island the addictive phenomenon that it is.
If you enjoy Love Island, then Love Overboard is the TV show for you.
The Love Overboard Show is Bringing Love Island Into the Sea

In Love Overboard, sexy singles (of course) are gathered on a yacht to find their next romantic relationship. However, there is more to the experience than finding a partner. Those who find a match are in a relationship on the topside, while the others stay on the downside as singles. The challenges to become a topsider leave singles in danger of having to walk the plank and out of the competition. The couple who manages to stay topside in the end wins a 100,00 trip with their new lover around the world.
Heads Up — There WILL be spoilers in this review.
These parts of Love Overboard stuck out to me the most: The Drama-Licious Personalities, The Betrayal, and The Host.
1. The Drama-Liscious Personalities
One aspect of the Love Overboard Show that really stood out to me was the Drama-Licious Personalities. When I saw Bella’s crashout minutes into the first episode, I said, where is my tea? I am SAT.
This is that Huda-adjacent sort of energy that makes these shows JUICY let me tell you!
And as I continued to watch the show, Bella’s personality became more well-rounded, her good-natured humor and sensitive spirit making her an endearing character. Then we have Sade’s bougie self, bringing heat just for the fun of it and avoiding every semblance of manual labor and deep diving.
And we can’t talk about dramatic characters without mentioning David. By golly, nothing irritates me more than an achingingly passive man.
I feel like dating shows really put that genre of men on blast. I barely recovered from Kevan on Love Is Blind, but now David’s level is just too diabolical. Subjecting the whole boat to a 45-minute standoff while you try to make one decision?! I was surprised that production didn’t just drop both the girls off the boat. But at the same time – would the season have been as juicy without David’s wild antics?
C’mon, we all know the answer.
And as much as I want to give Lo a little slap on the wrist for going in so hard on this man that made a fool of her and literally locking him in by force, something tells me that the edit of David that she saw was different than what the audience saw. He was making a lot of promises to these ladies (both Lo and Val) that he obviously didn’t keep once his words were put to the test. Diabolical man — and he’s supposed to be a therapist himself… smh.
2. The Betrayal
The additional element of this series, being the split between downside and upside, really gave this show the juiciness of potential ulterior motives, as we saw early on between Andrew (another entertaining character) and Sofia.
Sofia took advantage of Andrew’s interest in her for the sake of getting topside — a plan that ultimately ended in an embarrassing drop off the plank. Similar to Love Island, where at the very end of the show, the final couple can decide to Split or Steal the final prize fund, revealing whether their relationship was real or just a means to get a big payout.
Love Overboard creates fertile ground for the levels of public betrayal and embarrassment that we get the opportunity to witness on this wild ride of a TV show.
3. The Host
A final aspect that stood out was The Host. Gabby Windey, who is no stranger to reality TV, has always been an unexpectedly lovable force to be reckoned with. Her dirty innuendos, her slow and deliberate vocal fry as she speaks, her direct humor, and no-BS attitude rival the same humorous narrative overlay that Iain Stirling provides for Love Island. She makes it feel like you’re viewing the show with that no-filter friend rather than having an informative, disjointed tone guiding us through the story.
Differences to Note
One major difference between this show’s setup and Love Island is that the latter is literally 500 episodes long, as it tracks every single day of the Islanders’ lives. Love Overboard is done in what feels like a short 9 episodes. Because of how layered the characters unravel their personalities, there is this desire to spend a little more time with them.
They brought old cast members back quite often (except for Bella, unfortunately) to try to remedy this, but I wish it weren’t so much at the expense of the whole upside and downside concept. It seemed to fall apart too quickly at the end. I wish there were a way to still keep some of that momentum up towards the end of the series. But what’s great is that Love Overboard doesn’t overstay its welcome. It leaves you wanting more.

In Conclusion…
Love Overboard was flirty, sexy, and mindless entertainment that is a breeze to binge. Overall, I found it to be a really fun reality series.
The Love Overboard show is bringing back the magic of the mental junk food that is Reality Dating shows. It’s a fresh spin on all the elements that make Love Island such a pop culture success, and I’m so looking forward to our next voyage on the Chakra.
