Sometimes, I feel bad for rating a widely beloved film as mediocre, and then I watch a film as incredible as RRR and know that it would be an injustice to categorize a safe, mediocre film in the same group as this one.

RRR is the reason why movie theaters were made. This is stellar cinema and I’d been starving for it.

If you’re wondering, “Why is RRR so good?,” then these are the 3 reasons I would recommend everyone and their mother to watch it. (my mother loved it btw)

RRR is an epic action, drama Tollywood film (Telugu-language) set in the 1920s about an unwavering, steely British cop who crosses paths with a legendary warrior, both of them with conflicting missions. The journey is full of twists, turns, and unexpected outcomes.

The 3 aspects of RRR that make it so good are the heightened sense of reality, the insanely crisp quality, and the multilayered characters.

1. It Effectively Creates a Heightened Sense of Reality

One thing that RRR does exceptionally well is it effectively creates this new world, this heightened sense of reality. The colors are sharper, the dialogue is more theatrical, and everything is measuredly more dramatic in a way that is so convincing that you choose to believe it’s true.

RRR creates a bridge between the real world and the RRReal world (see what I did there?). Can a man truly single-handedly take on a crowd of thousands and still survive? Maybe not in the real world, but watch RRR make it happen.

Can a man escape and subdue not only a wolf but both a wolf and a tiger with only a few scratches to show for it? Watch how RRR makes you believe it’s entirely possible.

RRR creates these incredibly believable superhumans, with impressive physicality, superb camera work, and unreal CGI. The impeccable piecing together of all the details that make such impossibilities so real will have you marveling at the minds who crafted this daring and spectacular world with its extraordinary people.

2. Everything Is Crisp & High-Quality

Call this film a pink lady apple because it is insanely ~ crisp ~.

Within a few minutes of the film, I was stunned by how each shot looked like it came straight from an expensive wedding catalog.

The portrait mode was working at level 10 with solely the main character in focus with everything in the background blurred away. The camera quality looked better than what my eyes see in real life (although that’s not saying much considering I require strong prescription glasses).

This word ~crisp~ comes back into play when we reach our first big musical number about halfway through the movie.

The dance moves are so sharp, energetic, and clean that I was unsure how possible it would be to recreate them in real life. It looked like the main dancers were sped up, yet everything around them remained at a regular speed. How do they do this???

RRR gives you notably stunning visuals just for the sake of creativity. You’ll follow a character through the lens of a moving, burning wheel. Or you’ll watch a whole tower of people dressed uniformly in red create moving shapes from above.

While watching this film, I was convinced it must’ve cost a minimum of 1 billion dollars (it costs 72 million and is one of the most expensive Indian films ever). They must be rolling in cash to have been able to afford so many people, top-tier cameras, the world’s best CGI, and music. We haven’t even talked about the music yet!

My first note on this film was the following: “Music, right off the bat goes so hard; the vocal creativity and staccato are enchanting.”

The music throughout the film is phenomenal. Yes, yes, and yes again to the soundtrack.

3. The Characters are Multilayered

One final humongous praise for this film is how thoughtfully they crafted the main characters. Their motivations are so clear.

The script creates moments where the audience can feel precisely where a character’s anger, drive, and passion come from which is exactly what fuels our desire to root for them.

On the flip side, there are English characters in the film of whom we learn nothing of their backstory so they’re presented in very black-and-white forms.

In reality, the people that you don’t really know become one-sided caricatures based on stereotypes which accounts for why the English people in this film were mostly presented as villains. So I will say, the English men of this movie do not get layers, but our main characters get more layers than Baklava.

The relationship that our main characters build as well is such a heartwarming yet complex bromance. It’s always nice to see some platonic love in the picture.

And finally, there is such a strong, grounded understanding of who each character is. We see them affirm their beliefs and their friendship a few times throughout the film.

There are visual moments that you see repeat themselves in different contexts which so cleverly define and solidify each character.

It’s genius really.

In Conclusion…

To be honest with you, this is only a sliver of what makes RRR so good. I’ve watched it twice already and wouldn’t mind watching it again (and I usually am not a rewatch kind of gal).

If you haven’t already, take the time to watch the film for yourself. RRR is available on Netflix in several countries and it’s only a measly 3 hours long…

But really though, it’s a fun experience and it’s even more fun with friends or family. The only “queasy” thing about it is a bit of blood, violence, breaking body parts, and little things like that.

RRR is epic, mind-blowing, and top-tier cinema that is made for big screens, big audiences and deserves to be winning all kinds of awards on big stages.

Rating 9.5/10
