**Heads Up There WILL NOT be spoilers in this review.**
These parts of Dungeons and Dragons Honor Among Thieves stuck out to me the most: it’s hilarious, it nails the fantasy genre, and it has a brilliant cast of characters.
1. It’s Hilarious
One aspect of this movie that really stands out is how hilarious it is. There are so many laugh-out-loud moments in this film, it’s perfect to watch with other people.
From the beginning to the end, the film is laced with impeccable comedic timing and recurring jokes that never overstay their welcome.
Without spoiling the most knee-slapping parts, I’ll just say this movie is loads of fun to watch.
2. It Nails the Fantasy Genre
Another aspect of this movie that really stood out is that it nails the fantasy genre.
From strange creatures like the owl bear and the fat dragon, to life-threatening tournaments, to magic, treasure, and a team of misfits, Dungeons and Dragons takes all the essential elements of your classic fantasy story and melds them together perfectly.
3. It Has a Brilliant Cast of Characters
A final aspect that stands out is the Brilliant Cast of Characters.
Chris Pine as the main character, Edgin, effortlessly executes the cool-under-pressure, clever, and witty leader of the team of misfits. His comedic timing is on point and his ability to bring out the subtleties in this new character is impressive.
The most recent Chris Pine project, Don’t Worry Darling, had him playing a much different character, a charmingly sinister cult leader. For him to bring out this lighter character convincingly without it feeling odd is really impressive.
Michelle Rodriguez plays Edgin’s partner in crime, Holga Kilgore. A tough chick who will instantly make you regret underestimating her, she seamlessly walks the line between being hard and serious with being empathetic and caring.
Regé-Jean Page plays Xenk, a hybrid between human and magical being who seems to have an indisputably high moral compass. Page easily takes on the role of the practical, holier-than-though saint. Just the right amount of irritating and lovable.
Justice Smith nails playing Simon, the insecure magician, and Sophia Lillis slays as the confident, shape-shifting doric.
Hugh Grant and Daisy Head play the film’s villains with the perfect amount of silly and sinister.
When it comes to the casting and characters, no notes.
In Conclusion…
So is Dungeons and Dragons Honor Among Thieves good?
There really is nothing to dislike about Dungeons and Dragon’s Honor Among Thieves. Even for someone who is not very familiar with the game itself, the movie doesn’t discriminate in its enjoyability.
This film delivers a very effective rendition of your classic medieval quest with its clever and unique signature providing a film that is a riot to behold.
Dungeons and Dragon’s Honor Among Thieves is a movie worthy of a rewatch with some friends and family so you can share the laughs.
Although predictable, it executes the fantasy genre incredibly well. Especially when there haven’t been a lot of new medieval stories in theatres lately, it’s refreshing to have a new take on fantasy again.
