One of Them Days Review | Black Girl Magic on Full Display

Keke Palmer, SZA, and Issa Rae all in the same movie??

The catalog of One of Them Days reviews has done the film justice with a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The energy of this film is unmatched and the magnetic personalities of the cast shine impressively to produce a project that holds your attention from the beginning of this wild ride to the very end.

One of Them Days is a buddy comedy movie where roommates and besties, Dreux (Keke Palmer) and Alyssa (SZA) race the clock to retrieve their stolen rent money and escape eviction.

These parts of One of Them Days stuck out to me the most: the A1 casting, the engaging plot, and the energetic vibes.

A1 Casting

Now, I trust Keke Palmer to bring the energy and the hilarity every single time, and my good sis did not disappoint.

However, for SZA – I was a bit skeptical of her abilities as I’ve only seen her in the role of a moody, heartbroken, emotionally unhinged R&B singer. So to see her in a comedic role, I was expecting a lot of cringe but instead, I was pleasantly surprised. She really bodied her role and had amazing chemistry with Keke Palmer. Her comedic timing was nearly as pitch-perfect as her singing voice.

The Black Girl Excellence of this film was on full display partnered with incredible additional cameos from the hilarious Kat Williams, Janelle James, and Lil Rel Howery.

Keke and SZA beautifully portray a friendship that inspires both characters’ growth.

The chaos of the film and the series of unfortunate events embody the “Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl” energy that the phenomenal pIssa Rae is trademarked for.

Engaging Plot

Another aspect of this movie that stood out was the engaging plot.

Throughout, the story had me hooked. The script did a fantastic job introducing details and then circling back to those same details later in the film, tying off loose ends.

As the characters took one step forward, they hilariously ran into situations where they were pulled two steps back until they landed exactly where they needed to be by the end.

There are no lulls in the story which is rare for a full-length 1.5-hour runtime. In this fast-paced world of instant gratification, holding attention is difficult to do, but One of Them Days nails it.

Energetic Vibes

A final aspect of this film that stood out was its energetic vibes. This film is laced with such contagious energy!

Every scene change had me bouncing in my seat as the soundtrack bumped some irresistible tracks like Nissan Altima by Doecchi, TGIF by Glorilla, and Fight Night by Migos.

The soundtrack for One of Them Days is the perfect playlist for a girls’ night out. The music gets your energy there, ready to dance the night away and have a good time.

This keeps the vibes upbeat and drives the fast, engaging pace.

This couples with comedic moments that land every time and the unparalleled, dynamic energy of black culture.

In Conclusion…

One of Them Days is energetic, fast-paced, and hilarious. It doesn’t miss a beat.

The stellar casting and artistic choices make for a lighthearted watch that is bound to put you in a good mood.

One of Them Days is one of those movies that you’d be remiss to miss. It’s definitely worth your time.
